Kiawah Island Wedding at The Sanctuary
Hi there, Tanya here! Between my husband Harry and me, as Carolina wedding photographers, we’ve photographed weddings up and down the Carolina coast for over 16 years. Some weekends still catch us off guard with how special they are. Hayden and Clay’s Kiawah Island wedding at The Sanctuary was one of those. Grab a cup of coffee, because I want to walk you through it. Kiawah holds a special place for so many families, and for Hayden’s, it’s been a part of their story for years. Watching their wedding weekend unfold there felt like witnessing something that had been years in the making.
The Weekend Begins: Rehearsal Dinner at Kiawah’s Osprey Point
The celebration kicked off with a rehearsal dinner at Osprey Point Golf Club. The evening could not have been more beautiful. Hayden and Clay arrived on the golf course as the light started to soften, and guests were invited to enjoy cocktails before sitting down to a seated dinner with family and the wedding party. During dinner, plenty of heartfelt toasts were shared before the couple welcomed even more guests to join for a welcome party to close out the night. A fun detail I have to mention — their groom’s cake, made by Bonny Brunt Cakes, was shaped like a yeti cooler filled with beers. It was the perfect lighthearted touch before the big day.
Getting Ready on Kiawah: Champagne, Quiet Moments, and Buzzing Energy
The next morning, the girls got ready at a house near The Sanctuary, and the moment we walked in, the energy was already buzzing. Champagne and mimosas were flowing, and there was a rhythm to the morning quiet and easy, while Hayden got her hair and makeup done alongside her mom, sister, and bridesmaids.
From there, Hayden headed to the chapel at The Sanctuary to get into her dress with her mom. They made their way over by bus, music playing and laughter ringing out the whole way. When we arrived, we were greeted by Lauren Fox of Fox Events, who showed us to Hayden’s getting-ready room at the chapel.
Inside that room, Hayden and her mom, Shannon, made sure every detail was in place. Shannon helped button Hayden’s bolero while Cacky, their bridal aide, worked alongside them to get everything just right. Sweet, heart-filled moments followed with Hayden’s dad, brother, and sister before she shared a first look with her bridesmaids in front of the chapel.
First Look and Bridal Party Portraits
After warming up (and cooling off, it was a hot one), Hayden stepped back outside to share her first look with Clay. It was filled with sweet words of encouragement, elation, and a joy that was impossible to miss. Hayden and Clay approached their entire day this way: joyful, excited, and completely in love with each other and the moment.
From there, we moved into bridal party portraits. Hayden soaked in the energy of her girls surrounding her, while Clay ran pretend football formations with his groomsmen in front of The Sanctuary. It’s one of my favorite parts of any wedding day watching two different energies, equally full of joy, happening at the same time.
The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Wedding Ceremony
After portraits, we ducked everyone back into the air conditioning for a few minutes before heading to a stunning sailcloth tent set up on the back lawn at Kiawah Island. The reception design was citrus and orange-toned, colorful and summery, right down to an orange tree built into the bar and a custom dance floor detailed with elements pulled from their invitation suite. Lauren and her team at Fox Events truly left no detail untouched.
Hayden, her mom Shannon, and their families took a few minutes to see the tent before heading back up to The Sanctuary to prepare for the ceremony. And the ceremony itself — set on the lawn overlooking the ocean — was, for me, the sweetest part of the entire day. Hayden and Clay stood at the altar with the ocean as their backdrop and the breeze blowing gently as they committed to one another. At one point, their pastor asked everyone gathered to stand if they would support and uplift the couple throughout their marriage, and every single guest stood. The pastor blessed and pronounced them husband and wife; after a sweet first kiss, they walked back down the aisle beaming.
Cocktail Hour and Golden-Light Celebration
Cocktail hour followed on the lawn with passed hors d’oeuvres and champagne while Hayden and Clay stepped away briefly for family photos. When they rejoined their guests, they were met with pure joy on every face in the crowd.
The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Wedding Reception
The newlyweds were welcomed into their tented reception for a first dance as husband and wife, with one of their groomsmen singing “Ain’t Nothing About You” for the moment. Hayden followed with a father-daughter dance, and Clay shared a dance with his mom. Sweet, sentimental, and beautiful—it doesn’t get better than that.
From there, the couple cut into a beautiful four-tiered cake from Kiawah Island Catering and shared a champagne toast before the night opened into dinner, drinks, and dancing. The band kept the floor packed all night, warm weather and all, while guests worked their way through food stations of sliders, sushi, and shrimp and grits; a fitting mix of coastal and classic. Hayden and Clay exited their reception through a sparkler send-off and hopped into a Moke before heading straight into an after-party, where guests were invited to keep the night going in the ballroom with a DJ, late-night snacks, and plenty of energy left to burn—fun accessories included.
A Wedding Weekend at Kiawah Built on Trust
Hayden and Clay were an absolute joy to photograph because they didn’t worry about a single thing all weekend. They trusted their vendor team completely and simply soaked in every moment. From rehearsal dinner jitters to their sparkler exit. That trust is something I see again and again with our couples, and it’s always the couples who let go of the small stuff who end up with the best, most present wedding days. Thanks to an incredible team pulled together by Fox Events, this entire weekend went off without a single hitch because it was planned with so much care from the very start.
