The Best Charleston Wedding Venues: A Photographer’s Guide, Downtown & Beyond

Touring Charleston wedding venues is one of the best parts of planning, and one of the most overwhelming. The city is full of beautiful rooms, courtyards, and live oaks, and somewhere around the fourth tour, they start to blur together.

I’m Tanya of McSween Photography. Harry and I are a husband-and-wife team with over 16 years behind the lens, and we have been photographing weddings in Charleston for many of those years.

This guide walks through our favorite Charleston wedding venues the way I’d walk through them with you, as a photographer, plus four favorites for the rehearsal dinner.

For this list, I’ve split the wedding venues the way many couples choose: downtown, where the history is close and everything is walkable; further out, where the drive becomes part of the day; and Kiawah Island, where the Lowcountry meets the ocean. Within each venue, I’ve broken things down by the parts of a wedding day, because a venue is never just one room. It is a place to get ready, a place to marry, a place for portraits, and a place to celebrate. All of it has to work together.

One note before we begin. Rates, policies, and availability change, so treat this as a starting point and confirm the details with each venue directly.

What We Look for on a Venue Tour

• Go at the hour that matters. If your ceremony will be at five, try to see the space near five. A courtyard that feels airy at noon can sit in deep shade by evening, and the other way around.
• Walk the whole day. Stand where you’ll get ready, then walk to the ceremony, the portrait spots, and the reception. Notice the distance, the stairs, and where guests will wait.
• Ask about the rain plan. Not as a pessimist. In the Lowcountry, weather is part of the setting. Know where the ceremony moves, and what that room looks like when it does.
• And picture the space with people in it. A room can be lovely empty and tight with a full guest list. If you can, ask to see a layout from a real event.

Downtown Charleston Wedding Venues

Downtown is where Charleston is most itself. Cobblestones, wrought iron, church steeples, gas lanterns. Portraits can happen on the sidewalk outside the door, and a short walk or a trolley ride connects the rest of the day. The trade-off is space. Rooms and courtyards are often more intimate, and the streets are busy, so timing matters.

The Gibbes Museum of Art

The Gibbes sits on Meeting Street, in the heart of the Historic District. It is a Beaux Arts building with high ceilings, original crown molding, and a Tiffany-style art glass dome over the rotunda that changes the whole mood of the room. Harry and I photographed Carson and Andrew’s wedding weekend here this past summer, and you can see the whole day in their Gibbes Museum of Art wedding.

Getting Ready and Portraits

Plan to get ready at a hotel nearby, and ask the museum what is available on site for your date. Portraits are where the Gibbes shines. The Lenhardt Garden is a classical, European-style garden of about 12,000 square feet, with live oaks, fountains, and pathways, and the rotunda gives you a very different backdrop just inside. The cobblestone streets of the Historic District are a short walk away. That is the quiet gift of a downtown wedding. The scenery is already there. Nothing needs to be built.

Ceremony

The Gibbes offers two ceremony settings of its own: the rotunda beneath the dome, which holds up to 150 guests, and the garden, which the museum lists for up to 350 seated guests. Many couples marry in the rotunda and celebrate on the lawn, but the garden works for a ceremony as well. If you would rather marry somewhere else downtown, a church or another historic site is easy to pair with a museum reception, because everything is close.

Cocktail Hour and Reception

The rotunda is a natural place for cocktail hour, with guests looking at the art, and the museum’s exhibitions change, so what is on view will depend on your date. Ask what is scheduled. There is also a 1,345-square-foot sculpture hall for a smaller, more intimate dinner.

For a larger reception, the garden and lawn can be tented, and the museum lists a seated capacity of up to 350 guests. As a photographer, I love a reception here for the way it moves between kinds of light: the dome and the gallery walls inside, the garden and its live oaks outside as the evening settles in. The museum is reserved just for you and your guests, so the space feels private from the first photograph to the last dance.

Hibernian Hall

Hibernian Hall is in the heart of Charleston on Meeting Street. It was built in 1840 for the Hibernian Society, an Irish benevolent organization founded in 1801. The architect, Thomas Ustick Walter, also designed the dome and wings of the U.S. Capitol, and he gave this building a Greek Revival face: six Ionic columns holding up a pedimented portico. It is a National Historic Landmark, and the only building still standing that is associated with the 1860 Democratic National Convention.

Arrival and Portraits

Look closely at the details. The ironwork is by Charleston craftsman Christopher Werner and creates a gorgeous entrance to this historic building. A stone from County Antrim, Ireland, is set into the portico. This is a building that has come through fire, war, and the earthquake of 1886, and it shows in the best way. Hibernian Hall is in the perfect location in downtown Charleston, across from the iconic Chalmers Street, perfect for iconic downtown Charleston photos.

Ceremony and Reception

Inside, the entrance opens into a stair hall with a domed rotunda and three tiers of circular balconies, lined with Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns, over a checkered marble floor. It is one of the larger reception spaces downtown, so it suits a bigger guest list. As a photographer, I’d be thinking about the balconies, which let us see the room from above, and the columns, which give us layers to shoot through.

Getting Ready

Hibernian is a hall rather than an inn, so plan to get ready somewhere nearby. The Mills House hotel sits right next door, which keeps the morning simple and the walk short.

• Phone: (843) 577-2400 (events are booked through The Mills House Hotel)

The William Aiken House

The William Aiken House is located just beyond the bustle of Upper King. The yellow mansion dates to 1807 and sits on private grounds that feel a world away from the street. Around the main house, there are two covered piazzas, a pergola with a reflection pool, a carriage house, courtyards, and ballrooms inside.

Getting Ready

The house has a getting-ready room known as the Red Room, with space for a full bridal party and good natural light. Ask to see it at the hour you’d be there. Morning light in a room with that much space is something a photographer notices right away.

Ceremony and Cocktail Hour

Ceremonies are most often held outdoors, beneath the pergola or in front of the Carriage House. The covered piazzas give you shelter for pre-event cocktails or late-night mingling, with an easy flow back into the main house. That kind of flow is what keeps a cocktail hour feeling relaxed rather than crowded.

Reception

Many couples host a seated dinner inside the main house or tent the courtyard. The house and grounds are also accessible, with an elevator for the second floor, which is worth knowing if you have guests who need it.

Gadsden House

Gadsden House is between East Bay and Alexander Street. It is a Federal-style home that was restored and opened as a venue in 2015, and it is within walking distance of several downtown hotels, which helps your out-of-town guests.

Getting Ready

The house has a furnished bridal suite with a full kitchen and bath, and the venue describes it as a place to relax through the day. For us, a getting-ready space that is already on site means fewer moving parts and a calmer start. It also means that the details, the dress, the shoes, the rings, are photographed in the same place where the day will unfold.

Ceremony and Cocktail Hour

Three intimate courtyards mix bluestone, Charleston brick, and oyster tabby, with magnolias, crepe myrtles, and palms around them. The piazzas have gas lanterns and haint blue ceilings, a Lowcountry tradition, and they look out over the courtyard gardens and toward the waterfront. Custom tenting is available for the outdoor spaces, so ask what the rain plan looks like for your date.

Reception

Inside, four parlors have original heart pine floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, fireplaces and crystal chandeliers. Windows that tall bring daylight deep into a room, and that is a gift in photographs. Neutral interiors also mean your own flowers, linens, and colors take the lead.

Lowndes Grove

Lowndes Grove sits in the Wagener Terrace neighborhood, on 14 acres along the Ashley River. The house is Georgian in style and dates to around 1786. It takes its name from William Lowndes, a U.S. Congressman who bought the property in 1803, and it was later used as the Women’s Building during the 1901-1902 South Carolina Exposition. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Patrick family bought it in 2007, restored it, and opened it as an event venue. It feels like an estate, with a wide lawn and the river behind it, yet it is still on the peninsula.

Getting Ready

The bridal suite is on the second floor and opens at 9 a.m. on the wedding day. It leads onto a 750-square-foot piazza overlooking the river, so there is a place to step outside and take a breath before the day gets going. The piazza can also host a small cocktail hour of up to 100 guests standing.

Ceremony and Portraits

The Grand Lawn faces the river and is framed by the main house, which makes a natural setting for a ceremony. The venue describes it as a spot for western sunsets, so ask what time the light reaches the water on your date. A private dock extends 700 feet into the Ashley River, and it is one of the most distinctive spots for portraits at any of the downtown venues. The glass-enclosed portico, the Doric columns, and the sunlit terraces give you other backdrops without leaving the property.

Cocktail Hour and Reception

Cocktails and cake cutting fit well in the first floor and portico, which hold about 150 guests standing. For the reception, the Grand Lawn and a main tent hold 200 to 400 seated guests, and tenting is required. All food and beverage is handled in house, and a licensed, pre-approved event planner is required.

A few practical notes from the venue. The rental includes a four-hour event, with flexibility for vendor setup and two hours for breakdown, so build the timeline carefully and decide early what has to happen in those four hours. Parking on site is limited, so guest transportation is recommended, and security is required for private events.

Charleston Wedding Venues: Estates and Plantations

Past the peninsula, the day finds a different rhythm. The drive becomes part of the timeline, and the light has more room to move across lawns, rivers, and marshes. If you’re comparing Charleston wedding venues, this is where the question of travel time matters most, for you, for your guests, and for the photographs you’ll want between the ceremony and the reception.

The Admiral’s House

The Admiral’s House is located at Riverfront Park on the former Navy base. It is a Neo-Classical home built in 1905 for the commandant of the Charleston Navy Yard, officially called Quarters A. A white facade, stately columns, and wraparound verandas give it a very different feeling from the downtown mansions. The setting is the Cooper River, with large oaks draped in Spanish moss.

Getting Ready

The Admiral’s House offers overnight stays, with five bedrooms and ensuite baths, and there’s a bridal suite. That means the getting-ready portion of the day can happen at the venue, rather than in a hotel across town. The interior has a T-shaped layout with large windows throughout, so there is plenty of daylight to work with in the morning.

Ceremony and Reception

The verandas and the lawn make a natural setting for a ceremony, a cocktail party or a reception, and the property also has the Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel, which couples can inquire about reserving. A reception here is outdoors for the most part, under the oaks, so plan for tenting and ask how the venue handles weather.

Portraits

Columns, verandas, lawns, moss, and water views. The variety on one property is the draw. I’d want to walk the grounds in advance and note which spots hold up in the light of your ceremony time.

Boone Hall Plantation

Boone Hall is in Mount Pleasant, roughly half an hour from downtown depending on traffic. The property dates to 1681 and is one of America’s oldest working farms. Most people know it for the Avenue of Oaks, a three-quarter-mile drive lined with live oaks the venue describes as about 270 years old, draped in Spanish moss.

Getting Ready

Ask what’s available for getting ready on site. Many couples get ready at a hotel or rental in Charleston or on Isle of Palms, then travel out. Build that drive into your timeline, with a little cushion.

Ceremony

You can marry on the front lawn in front of the iron gates, or beneath the oaks on the Avenue. The Avenue of Oaks is the setting people picture when they imagine Boone Hall, and it earns the reputation. The branches make a canopy over your guests, and the light filters through the moss.

Reception and Portraits

The Cotton Dock is a rustic wooden building on a tidal marsh, with high ceilings, large windows, a grand fireplace, and a wooden dock over the water. It can host both a ceremony and a reception. Portraits can move between the oaks, the mansion, and the gardens. One practical note from the venue’s own event guide: events begin after the plantation closes to visitors, and tents are not permitted on the front lawn, the Avenue of Oaks side lawn, or by the Butterfly Cafe. Ask how that affects your timeline, and what the light will be doing at your start time.

Middleton Place

Middleton Place is at 4300 Ashley River Road, along the Ashley River. Allow about 45 minutes from downtown. It is a National Historic Landmark, and its 65 acres are described as America’s oldest landscaped gardens, with terraces, manicured plantings, moss-draped oaks, a House Museum, and working stables with farm animals. Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, once lived here.

Getting Ready

According to one planner’s guide, there are no dedicated getting-ready facilities on the property, so ask what is available for your date. Many couples get ready at a hotel or rental in Charleston with plenty of space and good natural light, then travel out. Build that drive into your timeline, with a little cushion. The Inn at Middleton Place, a 55-room inn on the property, is available for guests.

Ceremony and Portraits

The two main ceremony settings each hold up to 400 guests. The Parterre and Butterfly Lakes are a series of terraces that descend toward water features shaped like butterfly wings. The Octagonal Garden overlooks the river, with boxwood pathways. Other settings include the Secret Gardens, the Middleton Oak, the Crane Pool, and the Stableyards. For portraits, that variety is the draw: gardens, water, an enormous oak, and the stables, all within one property. Ask what time the light reaches your ceremony site on your date.

Reception

The Pavilion is a 4,700-square-foot building that hosts about 200 guests for a formal dinner or a cocktail event, and it can be expanded with a tent. A planner’s guide describes it as a bright space with large windows and neutral decor, so it works as a canvas for your own design. If you’d rather celebrate outdoors, a tent on the greensward is another option. On site, the restaurant serves Lowcountry cuisine inspired by chef Edna Lewis, with produce from the property’s organic farm.

Runnymede Plantation

Runnymede is a private venue on the Ashley River, with towering oaks and curtains of Spanish moss. On the grounds, you’ll find the ruins of the burned plantation house, including a brick chimney and the entrance steps. It is a place that feels lived in by time.

Ceremony and Portraits

A large, historic oak at the center of the property is a favorite spot for ceremonies, and it also makes a beautiful place for portraits. The chimney and steps give you a very different kind of frame, one that carries history without needing anything added.

Getting Ready and Reception

There is a bridal suite, but it is cozy and small, so plan for a more compact getting-ready group or consider a hotel. Runnymede is often described as a blank canvas, which is a gift if you love to design and a responsibility if you don’t. You will bring in your own planner, rentals, and lighting. With a mostly outdoor property, a clear weather plan matters, but there is a permanent tent on the property as a reception space.

Kiawah Island Venues

Four options come up often when couples ask about the island:

• The Sanctuary: a five-star oceanfront hotel with access to the resort’s private beach, with ceremonies on the oceanfront lawns or in the ballrooms. Wedding details
• The Ocean Course: a clubhouse at the edge of the island with a wraparound veranda over the golf course and the Atlantic, and an upper lawn for ceremonies. Wedding details
• The River Course: a clubhouse within the Kiawah Island Club, with river and marsh views and live oaks. It welcomes members and their invited guests, so ask how access works for your date. Kiawah Island Club
• The Dunlin: an Auberge Resorts Collection property on the Kiawah River, with ceremonies beneath live oaks along the riverbank and 74 rooms, suites, and bungalows on site. Wedding details

Rehearsal Dinner Venues

The rehearsal dinner is often the first time your people are all in one room. The space is smaller, the light is softer, and the toasts are usually where the laughter and the tears start. If you’d like us there, tell us when you reach out. Here are three places I’d look at.

Surcee’s

Surcee’s is on King Street, in a historic downtown building that once housed a nineteenth-century candy shop. It has four rooms that can be arranged in different ways, a second-floor outdoor terrace with market lighting, and a capacity of 150 guests or fewer. Food and beverage, rentals, and event management are handled in-house.

It is also where we photographed Carson and Andrew’s rehearsal dinner. Their closest family and friends gathered for cocktails and a small, intimate dinner. We snuck the two of them out for a few minutes on King Street for quiet photos before the night got going, and then upstairs the toasts began, and it didn’t take long before the room was somewhere between laughter and tears. That kind of night sets the tone for everything that follows.

• Address: 559 King Street, 2nd Floor, Charleston, SC 29403

Parcel 32

Parcel 32 is also on King Street, in a historic 1837 home on Upper King. It blends period architecture with modern design, including ornate tilework and curated furnishings. The venue holds up to 150 guests. The downstairs dining room seats up to 80, and the upstairs Parlor has piazza seating that overlooks King Street. There is also a main bar for cocktails and a courtyard entrance. An in-house culinary team provides customizable menus, and the venue supplies tables, chairs, linens, tableware, and glassware. The location is walkable to hotels, restaurants, and cultural sights, which is helpful when your guests are in town for the weekend.

Poogan’s Courtyard

Poogan’s Courtyard is on Cumberland Street in the French Quarter, near Rainbow Row and the City Market. It is part of Poogan’s Hospitality Group, the team behind Poogan’s Porch, and the venue is built around a historic brick courtyard with open-air spaces for different parts of the evening. The courtyard holds up to 50 guests for a ceremony, 80 seated, or 125 for a cocktail reception, which makes it a good match for a rehearsal dinner that is warm and full but still feels like a gathering rather than a banquet.

The package is all-inclusive, with round tables, farm chairs, floor-length linens, tableware, built-in audio and visual systems, bartenders, service staff, and an on-site event coordinator. The menus draw on the Poogan’s restaurants and lean toward Lowcountry classics. As a photographer, I like a courtyard for a rehearsal dinner because the evening can move easily between a seated dinner and a cocktail-style mingle, and the brick gives the photographs a lot of texture.

Halls Signature Events

Halls Signature Events is the private events side of Halls Chophouse, and it sits at 5 Faber Street in the French Quarter, steps from Waterfront Park. The building was originally a warehouse, and it has been restored with its character intact: exposed brick, wood-beam ceilings, skylights, grand chandeliers, and a mezzanine lounge. The space is nearly 7,000 square feet and flexes to accommodate up to 250 guests, so it can host a rehearsal dinner that is small and warm or one that is a full party the night before.

The food is a draw in itself. The in-house culinary team focuses on premium steaks, fresh seafood, and Lowcountry cuisine, and menus can be plated, buffet-style, a cocktail reception, or interactive stations, with full bar service and audio-visual support. The location is within walking distance of downtown hotels, churches, and restaurants, which keeps the evening simple for guests who are in town for the weekend.

A Few Questions to Bring to Every Tour

Where will we get ready, and what is the light like in that room? How far is it from there to the ceremony? Where do the two of us go for portraits, and how long will it take to walk there? What is the weather plan for the ceremony, and what does it look like in the photographs? When does the venue end, and does that leave time for the evening light?

Whichever of these Charleston wedding venues ends up on your short list, the most useful thing you can do is walk it as if it were your wedding day. Stand where you’ll stand. Look where your guests will look. A good photographer will tell you what they see, and a good venue will answer the questions you didn’t know to ask.

Looking for a wedding photographer for your Charleston wedding?

As Charleston Wedding Photographers, Harry and I photograph every wedding with two perspectives: the composed and the candid. Guidance when it’s needed. Space when it’s not.
