Meet the Stillwagon family! Richard and Rowena recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and 80th birthdays. They met their children and in-laws at Snowbird Mountain Lodge, in Robbinsville, NC. What a wonderful gift to be able to celebrate such a milestone together.
They met swimming during a summer in junior high. Sixty years ago, grand, romantic proposals weren’t too common. They’d been going together for 6 years. Everyone expected they’d marry, so he presented her with a ring at Christmas time their freshman year of college.
Richard was a school teacher for nearly 25 years at Crown Point High in Crown Point, Indiana. He taught biological and earth sciences and also served as a football and track coach. In the early 1980s, Richard purchased a Snap-on Tool franchise and moved to Riverview, Florida, leading the family’s migration from Indiana to the south. He retired from Snap-on after a successful 23 years.
Rowena spent several years as a tailor for the local dry cleaner and ran a sewing business out of the house. She made and mended many of her children’s clothes throughout childhood. She also sang in the choir and Crown Point United Methodist Church. Her full-time occupation, however, was as a housewife and mother of four active kids. She was there for every sport event, scout meeting, and Sunday school. She was 5-foot-nothing force who imposed herself on the world and her children, shaping them all. Put differently, it’s her fault we turned out like we did!
What an inspiration to us all. I came away from this session with Richard and Rowena, and their family with a renewed excitement for watching my family grow! I know I am early in the game, but if the Lord lets me meet my grandchildren and great grand children what a blessing that will be.
